Interview with a Reader: Allen Kohen

Allen Kohen has been reading since he was four and books have always been a significant part of his life.

BMH: How important is a book cover to you?

AK: Not that much, although now and then I’m drawn to look further when the cover catches my eye.

BMH: What attracts your eye to a book?

AK: Different things at different times: the color/design often.

BMH: How important is the title?

AK: Not vital, but some titles really do resonate.

BMH: How do you choose a book?

AK: Different things at different times.  Often a friend’s recommendation.

BMH: How long does an author have to hook you?

AK: Usually it only takes a few pages.

BMH: What is your favorite form of book…print, ebook, paperback, hardback?

AK: I use/have all three.

BMH: How often do you listen to audio books?

AK: When I was commuting, I did a lot.  Not so much these days.

BMH: How willing are you to take a chance on an author new to you?

AK: Quite a bit – especially if a friend has suggested it.  Also a good review.

BMH: How important is the back cover blurb?

AK: Not that important.  I do look at them.

BMH: How important are reviews to you?

AK: A good review, as in both positive and well written, can make all the difference.

BMH: Where do you shop to buy books?

AK: Mostly Amazon as I do Kindle a lot of my books, but also local stores.

BMH: What will make you stop reading?

AK: A superior attitude on the part of the author.

BMH: If an author loses you for poor editing, plotting etc, how can they get you back? Or can they?

AK: Mostly they don’t.

BMH: What do you want from a book?

AK: To be engaged, informed.

BMH: Have you visited an author’s website?

AK: Not that many.

BMH: Have you visited an author’s blog or Facebook page?

AK: No.

BMH: Do you attend author’s events…book signings, etc.?

AK: Yes, but it has been rare this last year.
