Raymond Ambler, librarian and sleuth, receives a note from his good friend and bartender, Brian McNulty, about a murder and which sets him off on another investigation–reluctantly. A second murder, however, convinces him he’s doing the right thing because the second victim is a friend of McNulty’s making him the prime suspect. The victim has led a double life – one as a hard-drinking promiscuous denizen of the city, the other as a devoted wife and mother and physician.
